If you are a CDL driver, or you want to become a CDL driver, you may have heard about CDL endorsement codes and the benefit of having multiple endorsements on your license.

But you also might be wondering, what are CDL restriction codes?

Having a CDL restriction code on your license means you are limited to which vehicles and/or equipment you are authorized to drive.

Unlike endorsement codes, you do not want to collect a lot of CDL restriction codes on your license.

Keep reading to learn about each CDL restriction code and what it could mean for your truck driving career.

What is the purpose of CDL Restriction Codes ?

There are a number of restriction codes and the reason they even exist is to keep our roads safe.

According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, “Restrictions are placed on a CDL when a driver takes the skills test in a vehicle which lacks critical equipment present in particular types of CMVs.”

There are strict standards for testing and licensing for a reason.

Entry-level drivers should go into these tests prepared with hours of training and skills knowledge in relation type of CDL vehicle in which they are looking to operate.

If you want to avoid these restrictions, preparation and knowledge are key.

What is CDL Restriction O?

A driver will receive a CDL Restriction O on their license if they take their skills test in a vehicle with a non-fifth wheel connection.

A “fifth wheel” connection hooks your truck to whatever it’s towing, so that means you won’t be able to drive a semi-truck with an attached trailer.

As a truck driver, this will be a huge limitation for you, so you’ll want to consider getting it lifted. To get it lifted, you’ll need to take the skills test in the right vehicle.

What is the Air Brake Endorsement on License? and what does that mean for the Class L restriction?

An air brake endorsement requires that you pass an additional test regarding air brakes and their operation. If you don’t pass the full air brake test, you will receive a Class L restriction on your license.

Air brakes are used on large trucks and other commercial vehicles (such as buses, tankers, and tractors) that exceed 26,000 pounds gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR).

These type of brakes use compressed air instead of hydraulic fluid to pressurize the braking system.

This could hinder your job opportunities, as many vehicles operate on a full air brake system and understanding how to operate air brakes is essential to road safety. If you don’t pass this test the first time, you are allowed to take it again. Once you do pass the air brake test, you can have the restriction lifted.

E Restriction: CDL Automatic Transmission Restriction

If your CDL has an automatic transmission restriction, it means CDL restriction codes E will be placed on your license, and you won’t be allowed to operate any vehicle with manual transmission.

Because many trucks are equipped with manual transmission, this limitation can make you an undesirable driver to some trucking companies. Manual transmissions also require more skills and knowledge to operate. To get this restriction lifted, you must take your CDL skills test in a manual transmission vehicle. If you don’t have a manual truck to practice on, see if your employer or driver school has one available for you to learn with.

What is a Class B Restriction

The Class B restriction is a restriction that prohibits the driver from operating a vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) over 26,000 pounds.

Are you wondering how to remove restriction B on a drivers license?

It can be easily removed by taking a driving skills test at your local DMV office to demonstrate that you are capable of driving vehicles over 26,000 pounds GVWR safely and responsibly.

CDL restriction K

The CDL restriction K is a restriction that means the driver is only allowed to operate their commercial vehicle within the state that issued them their CDL license. This is obviously a very limiting restriction, as many trucking companies are interested in hiring truck drivers who can operate on interstate, long-haul routes. If you plan on taking on longer routes, you may want to consider getting the K restriction lifted.

Restriction F on drivers license

A restriction F on your CDL means an outside mirror is required on your vehicle. This restriction is a bit redundant since most vehicles already are equipped with outside mirrors, but it’s more of a medical acknowledgment if the driver has a medical issue that prevents them from turning their head to look out the rear window.

M restriction on CDL (CDL restriction M)

An M restriction on your CDL means the driver is only authorized to drive a Class B or C passenger vehicle or school bus. If the driver has a Class A CDL, but goes for their Passenger Endorsement test in a Class B vehicle, then the CDL restriction M will be placed on their license.

Removing automatic restriction on CDL

If you’ve received an automatic restriction on your CDL, the good news is that getting it lifted isn’t difficult. It can, however, be time-consuming. Depending on the restriction code you are looking to remove, you may have to do different things, including:

  • Taking additional written knowledge exams.
  • Taking additional road skills tests. This includes taking your test in a vehicle that meets the requirements of that particular restriction.
  • Further medical evaluations (if needed).
  • Paying additional fees.

These requirements will vary by restriction code, and although there are federal standards, they may vary state to state. Be sure to look into your specific state’s rules.
