Before you dive into the steps to starting your career as a CDL A driver, you should consider the pros and cons.

Truck drivers can make a lot of money. And can have a lot of independence for your routes and scheduling.

But being a truck driver is a demanding job. You will work a lot of hours of physically demanding work driving a truck. It can be strenuous and stressful. Depending on what type of trucker you are, you might be away from your family more than most other jobs.

Steps to become a CDL A driver

Let’s break it down into easy steps. For more details on requirements for getting your CDL, check out this article.

1. Age Requirement

Most states allow you to obtain a CDL at 18 but keep in mind that a majority of trucking companies hire drivers who are at least 21 years old due to it being the age limit to drive a commercial motor vehicle across state lines. (FMCSA)

2. Get your Commercial Learner’s Permit

A commercial learner’s permit is a permit that authorizes you to practice on public roads under the supervision of a qualified CDL holder. Earning the permit is more than just passing knowledge-based tests. Your driving record is checked for any history in the past 10 years in all states. You’ll also need to bring in proof that your state accepts that you are medically qualified. The majority of commercial driving requires a DOT medical card.  (FMCSA)

3. Complete Driver training

Drivers that are applying for a Class A or Class B CDL for the first time must complete entry-level driver training with a registered training provider. Check with your state for more specific details as they may have additional requirements

Note: There is no Federal requirement for drivers to complete their entry-level driver theory training before applying for a CDL (FMCSA)

4. Attend CDL Programs – Truck Driving School

You’ll have to attend a truck driving school- these programs normally last about three weeks. Programs at community colleges last about 6 weeks.

5. Passing the knowledge exam and skills test

The knowledge exam is online and focuses on commercial driving based on the CDL manual. On the other hand, the skills test has three parts: basic controls, vehicle inspection, and a road test

6. Get the Right Documentation

Be prepared to show proof of a valid non-commercial driver’s license, your social security, birth certificate, or U.S. passport. If you aren’t an American citizen you’ll also need to show your green card.

You will be required to pass a DOT medical exam and all applicable background screens

7. Pay license and endorsement fees 

Paying for your CDL A license can be a big barrier for entry. School can often cost upwards of $8,000.
