Nothing can shut down a highway quite like wintry conditions. If the roads are getting bad and you don’t have the right supplies to get back on route, you could be stuck waiting. And being stuck waiting means you aren’t making money.
One of the most important ways to stay safe as a truck driver in the winter is by having the proper equipment. Be overly prepared! Have the right equipment for the job (and the weather).
Here is a checklist of must-have items for truck drivers to get through the winter:
- Chains – make sure you have enough and have the right size!
- Cam Lock T-handles
- Good, waterproof gloves
- Reflective vest
- Kneeling pad
- Boots with good traction
- Hats, gloves, scarves – whatever you need to keep you warm
- Extra warm bedding
- Extra blankets
Equipment for the Truck
- Extra Washer Fluid
- Anti-gel, Anti-gel, Anti-gel
And always remember Trip planning is the key to safe and stress free winter truck driving. Don’t wait until Mother Nature hits us with the next storm, plan ahead!
